After Smith Rock

Apophatic Desert

What is not basalt is bone
What is not bone is glare
All that is not glare is juniper thin air

I come here to empty –
stark end of ego –
refulgence of discomfort
I sweat. I burn. Oxygen deficit
There is no shade under scrub oak
no respite on rocky crag

What is not sage is cleft
What is not cleft is death
All that is not death is luminous end.
